7 Tips to Stay Safe from Drunk Driving/Drivers This New Years Eve
The Church Agency, not only wants you to have a festive time bringing in the New Year but also remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving. If we can educate people that buzzed driving is also unacceptable and will also cause car accidents, we are saving lives.
Here are 7 New Year’s Eve safety tips:
1. Have a designated driver: Do not ever drink and drive. Ask a friend or a family member for a ride, or make a reservation for a taxi.
2. Monitor your alcohol intake: Many people associate New Year’s Eve celebrations with drinking. Be aware of how much you are drinking. Make sure you stay hydrated (with water) and that you eat enough.
3. Take the keys: If you have a friend who is too drunk to drive, take the keys. Get your friend a ride home with a trusted sober driver, or call his or her family for a ride.
4. Stick together: Going to parties, bars and dance clubs can be hectic, and with too much alcohol, some people lose control. Traveling in groups creates a safety net.
5. Stay off the roads: Drinking and driving car accidents are highest between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., so try and stay off the roads during those hours.
6. Drive defensively: If you must drive, be aware of your surroundings, drive defensively and call the police if you see anything illegal or suspicious taking place. As always, wear your seat belt and don’t drive distracted.
7. If you’re hosting a New Year’s Eve party, adhere to the following safety suggestions:
• Have a ride for your guests: Contact a local cab company so your guests can have rides.
• Juice, soda, water: Also serve non-alcoholic beverages for your guests. Have lots of water on hand.
• Plenty of food: Make sure you have enough food on hand so your guests can have something on their stomachs beside alcohol.
• Stop serving: Stop serving alcohol well before the party ends.
• Sleep over: Let your guests stay the night if they wish to stay off the roads.

Flooding and high water remains a concern in parts of Ohio.
Drivers are making their way through flooded roadways including Old Oxford State Road. The road has been covered with water for several days. The high water has been surrounding houses and a church that have been in the area for the past 20 years. Sandbags are being used to keep the water out.
Experts told ONN that the ground is so saturated; it could lead to severe flooding this spring. According to the National Weather Service the Greater Cincinnati area has seen nearly 70 inches of rain in 2011 which makes it the wettest year on record.

SEVEN TIPS ON CLASSIFYING WORKERS AS EMPLOYEES VERSUS INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS
Small business owners can hire individuals as either employees or independent contractors. Which classification a hired individual falls under is often a confusing process for business owners, but it’s this critical classification that affects what tax documents must be filed; how much you, the business owner, pays in taxes; as well as whether or not you should be withholding from a particular workers paycheck or not.
If you own a business and hire people, then you should keep these seven points in mind as you go about hiring workers as either employees or independent contractors:
1. If you, as an employer, intentionally or otherwise mis-classified your workers, then you could suffer significant tax bills and be facing hefty penalties for not filing the appropriate tax forms and not paying employment taxes.
2. You should know and understand how the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) determines the relationship between a worker and a business. The IRS uses the following three factors in determining this relationship:
- Type of relationship, which means how both your business and the worker views the relationship.
- Financial control, which refers to whether or not your business can control or direct the business and monetary aspects of the workers job.
- Behavioral control, which refers to whether or not your business can control or direct how work is done through means like training or instruction.
3. IRS Form SS-8, which is labeled as the Determination of Worker Status for Purposes of Federal Employment Taxes and Income Tax Withholding, can be filed by employers and/or workers. This form essentially asks the IRS to determine if a specific workers status should be classified as an employee or as an independent contractor. IRS form SS-8 can be obtained online at IRS.gov or by calling 1-800-829-3676.
4. Generally speaking, a worker should most likely be classified as an employee if the employer can direct or control what is being done and how it’s done.
5. Generally speaking, a worker should most likely be classified as an independent contractor if the employer only directs or controls the result of the work, and not the manner, means, or methods being used to accomplish the end result.
6. Do ensure that workers are aware of their classification, or worker status. This will not only help them avoid higher tax bills, but also avoid losing any valuable benefits.
7. Check out the small business tab on the IRS.gov website and IRS publications 15-A, 1779, and 1976 to find out more about determining a workers status as either an employee or as an independent contractor.

Health Insurance Premiums Spiked This Year Even as Wages Stagnated
Premiums for employer sponsored family Health Insurance plans went up 9 percent this year, and workers’ shares of premiums and deductibles also soared, a new national survey shows.
The average yearly cost for a family health plan increased to $15,073 this year, up from $13,770 in 2010. The average worker cost for family coverage was $4,129 with employers paying the remaining $10,944.
Premiums for worker-only coverage rose 8 percent, to a total of $5,429, with the average worker share reaching $921.
And researchers say it’s no coincidence that the soaring health coverage costs came as wages rose by 2.1 percent and inflation rose by 3.2 percent. – By LEE BOWMAN

Do You Haul Hazardous Materials?
Recently the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) made some changes to the Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) program. In the August 3, 2011 Safety Measurement System (SMS) release, the FMCSA refined the criteria that determines which motor carriers are subject to the more stringent Hazardous Materials (HM) intervention threshold. This improvement, which was made after several months of careful monitoring and listening to industry and enforcement safety professionals, allows FMCSA to more accurately identify those motor carriers that transport placardable quantities of HM.
In a sense, this more accurate identification should work both ways. Let me explain. Previously, the HM intervention threshold was applied to motor carriers based solely on their registration information indicating they transported any quantity of HM. This resulted in some motor carriers being subjected to the lower HM threshold that in fact were not carrying placardable quantities of HM, and conversely, resulted in some carriers not being subjected to the lower HM threshold that should have been.
Now, the intervention threshold is based on operational evidence which is consistent with CSA’s 24 month monitoring. This operational evidence is based on one of the following criteria;
- Inspection in the last 24 months where the motor carrier was identified as carrying placardable quantity of HM
- Review or safety audit in the last 24 months where the motor carrier was identified as carrying placardable quantity of HM
- Motor carrier has a HM permit

Man dies after crash on Interstate 77 in Summit County
AKRON, Ohio - A 70-year-old man died after a crash in Summit County on Monday.
Jim Youngson, of Uniontown, died after the crash occurred on Interstate 77 south in Akron at about 6:40 p.m., according to a release from the Summit County Medical Examiner.
Youngson was driving a 1990 pick-up truck in the southbound lanes of Coventry Street when he drove over a guardrail, down an embankment and onto the southbound lanes of I-77, according to the release.
He struck several vehicles before hitting a concrete barrier on the highway.
Youngson was pronounced dead at the scene at about 7:25 p.m.
An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday to determine the official cause of death. – By: Garrett Downing

Only 9 Percent of Employers Envision Dropping Health Plans
Almost three-quarters of medium to big companies will keep offering Business Health Insurance benefits to employees once state-based insurance exchanges kick off in 2014, according to a survey by Towers Watson.
The study adds to a growing body of research tracking the effect of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul on employers, where most working-age Americans get their Health Insurance coverage.
Less than a third of the surveyed employers felt confident that the exchanges would offer a viable alternative to coverage sponsored by the company, according to the voluntary survey conducted in July by Towers Watson and released last week.
Only 9% of mid- to large-sized companies plan to end their health insurance benefits after state-based insurance exchanges launch in 2014, and 6% may do so without fully compensating their employees.

Three Akron Police Officers were injured in a Traffic Accident Involving their Cruisers.
The crash happened on Interstate 76 westbound just west of Route 59 just before midnight Friday. Reports say several police cars were blocking the highway to secure an accident scene when a man driving a Ford Expedition allegedly hit two cruisers and three officers.
Those officers were taken to local hospitals where they were treated and released. Driver Dwayne Shepherd, 33, was taken to Akron City Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

How is Classic Car Insurance different from standard Car Insurance?
